The Mayan Culture has existed long before the Aztecs and the European discovery of the ‘New World’. This retreat is a unique opportunity to experience the Mayan culture firsthand with insight into their approach to relations with others including humans, fauna and flora. Guiding our journey of Mayan discovery, we will focus on the connection with the elements: water, fire, earth, and air and the impact on ourselves and those around us.
Your journey begins in the small fishing village of Puerto Morelos with its vibrant local community and enjoy a welcome dinner at a Michelin Mention restaurant. You will be staying in new 5-star boutique resort located directly on the beach.
Meet local Mayans at several traditional wellness activities. There will be a tour of the ruins of Coba, a Mayan city that was led by women rulers. Coba flourished between 500 to 900 AD and is estimated to have had 50,000 inhabitants. The site contains a group of large temple pyramids, as well as many Selae – stone slab monuments that give insight into their culture, dress, the roles of power of both men and women in ceremonial and political activities.
You will participate in a Mayan cooking class where you will gather ingredients from the garden, learn cooking techniques, and prepare together your own sumptuous dinner.
There will also be opportunities to learn how to make a local craft. Renew yourself with Mayan wellness treatments and swimming in underground cenotes or natural pools, sunrise/sunset yoga, meditation as well as sound healing.
Learn about the initiatives to restore the dying coral reefs, a non-profit that teaches the local children to care for the sea, its inhabitants and flora to ensure its protection and growth.
